About
Australia is the biggest country in Oceania and the sixth largest in the world by land size. It consists of the mainland, the island state of Tasmania, and many small islands. It is a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy with about 28 million people, mostly living on the east coast. People call it “Down Under”, “Oz”, or the “Great Southern Land”. Popular foods here are meat pies, sausage sizzles, pavlova, lamingtons, Vegemite, and Anzac biscuits.
Features
The nation is involved in international groups and is a major non-NATO ally of the United States. The culture of the indigenous people here is one of the oldest living cultures on the planet. It is the flattest and driest inhabited continent, with all kinds of landscapes and climates.
In 1783, the British sent a group of ships, called the First Fleet, to start a penal colony in New South Wales. At that time, they used to send convicts to Australia for minor crimes.
